Party game that inspires meaningful conversation between different generations through various topics related to adulthood
The goal of this project is to encourage members of different generations to stay curious and discuss these differences (and any similarities) in a playful way.
Before creating a problem statement, I first audited for online presences of “adulting” and generational banter.
Most survey respondents agreed there was tension between generations due to different perspectives about ways of life. No surprise there.
However, the examples of positive interactions described by respondents involved conversation where both parties were open minded and genuinely curious. Therefor, I was set on figuring out how to encourage more conversations like this.
I decided to create a game because games bring people together and encourage curiosity.
I did many rounds of play-testing where I evaluated which prompts encouraged good conversations, the rules and scoring system, and the physical design of the game and its components.
During this phase I explored word-marks, typography, illustration, and game materials.
The overall design aims to feel playful, bold, and dynamic.
This creates a fun contrast with the illustrations which portray mundane adult tasks that often feel much bigger than they are. The “Adulting” word-mark pairs a classic serif and modern sans serif, symbolizing the relationship between younger and older generations.
Conversations that took place during play-testing are documented in a book that lives with the game.
The book features dialog between generations and their various responses to the different prompts in the game.
